Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Application Guide for Remote Workers
Spain launched its digital nomad visa in 2023. Here's everything remote workers need to know about eligibility, taxes, and the application process.
Spain's Digital Nomad Visa Explained
Spain's Ley de Startups, effective January 2023, introduced the long-awaited digital nomad visa (officially the "international teleworking visa"). This visa allows non-EU remote workers to live in Spain while working for foreign employers or as freelancers serving non-Spanish clients.
Who Can Apply?
The visa targets remote workers who meet these criteria:
- Work for a company outside Spain (or have Spanish clients representing less than 20% of your total income)
- Have at least 1 year of working relationship with your employer (or 3 months for freelancers)
- Can prove professional qualifications or 3+ years of experience in your field
- Minimum income requirement: approximately 200% of Spain's minimum wage (roughly €2,500/month)
- Company must have been operating for at least 1 year
The Beckham Law Tax Benefit
Here's where it gets interesting. Digital nomad visa holders can opt into Spain's "Beckham Law" tax regime, which means:
- Flat 24% tax rate on Spanish-source income (up to €600,000)
- No tax on worldwide income outside Spain for up to 6 years
- No wealth tax obligations
This is a massive advantage compared to Spain's regular progressive tax rates, which can reach 47%. For a remote worker earning €80,000, the tax savings can amount to €10,000-15,000 per year.
Application Steps
Step 1: Apply at the Spanish consulate in your country or, if you're already in Spain on a tourist visa, through the Unidad de Grandes Empresas (UGE).
Step 2: Submit required documents: valid passport, criminal background check, proof of remote work arrangement, health insurance, and proof of sufficient funds.
Step 3: Processing takes 30-45 days. The initial visa is valid for 1 year.
Step 4: Renewable for up to 5 years total. After 5 years, you can apply for permanent residency.
Best Cities for Digital Nomads in Spain
Barcelona and Madrid are the obvious choices with their coworking scenes and international communities. But don't overlook Valencia (lower cost of living, beach lifestyle), Málaga (growing tech hub, great weather), and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (year-round warm weather, established nomad community).
Monthly Budget
Expect to spend €1,800-3,000/month in Barcelona or Madrid, or €1,400-2,200/month in smaller cities. This covers rent, food, transport, coworking space, and entertainment.
