Thailand Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa: Digital Nomad Guide
Thailand's LTR visa offers digital nomads and remote workers a 10-year stay with tax benefits. Here's how to get it.
Thailand's Game-Changing LTR Visa
Launched in 2022, Thailand's Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa is a 10-year visa specifically designed to attract high-potential individuals, including digital nomads, remote workers, and wealthy retirees. It's Thailand's answer to the growing competition for location-independent professionals.
Four Categories of LTR Visa
The LTR visa comes in four flavors:
- Wealthy Global Citizens: Personal income of at least $80,000/year and $1 million in assets
- Wealthy Pensioners: Pension income of $80,000/year or $40,000+ with $250,000 investment in Thai government bonds or property
- Work-from-Thailand Professionals: Income of $80,000/year with 5+ years experience in a target industry
- Highly Skilled Professionals: Income of $80,000/year working for a Thai company or government agency
Key Benefits
The LTR visa offers remarkable benefits that set it apart:
- 10-year visa with multiple entries
- Reduced personal income tax rate of 17% (down from up to 35%)
- Exemption from reporting every 90 days (annual reporting instead)
- Digital work permit for remote workers
- Fast-track immigration at airports
- Up to 4 dependents included
Application Process
Step 1: Apply online through the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) website. Upload all required documents digitally.
Step 2: BOI reviews your application within 20 business days. If approved, you receive an endorsement letter.
Step 3: Take the endorsement letter to a Thai embassy or apply within Thailand to receive your LTR visa stamp.
Step 4: If you need a work permit, apply through the Digital Work Permit system — it's streamlined for LTR holders.
Cost of Living Comparison
Thailand remains one of the most affordable countries in Southeast Asia for expats. A comfortable lifestyle in Bangkok costs $1,500-2,500/month, while Chiang Mai can be done for $1,000-1,800/month. The LTR visa's tax benefits can save high earners $10,000-30,000 annually compared to standard Thai tax rates.
Is the LTR Visa Right for You?
If you meet the income requirements, the LTR visa is arguably the best long-term visa option in Southeast Asia. The combination of a 10-year stay, tax benefits, and minimal reporting requirements makes it extremely attractive. The main barrier is the $80,000 income threshold, which puts it out of reach for many digital nomads just starting out.
